The eHealth-Hub team is pleased to highlight the launch of the landmark Lancet Oncology Commission on Cancer Genomics and Precision Oncology, co-chaired by Professor Mark Lawler, Co-Lead of eHealth-Hub, Chair in Translational Cancer Genomics and Professor of Digital Health at Queen's University Belfast.
Launched at the World Cancer Congress in Hong Kong, the Commission presents a comprehensive global roadmap to support more equitable access to precision oncology and cancer genomics. Bringing together international experts in oncology, genomics, public health, health policy, data science and patient advocacy, the Commission addresses the significant inequalities that currently limit access to life-changing molecular testing and targeted cancer treatments across the world.
While advances in cancer genomics have transformed diagnosis and treatment for many patients, the Commission found that access remains highly uneven, with many healthcare systems lacking the infrastructure, resources and expertise needed to deliver precision oncology effectively. It estimates that millions of cancer patients who require molecular testing each year are currently unable to access it.
Professor Lawler emphasised the importance of addressing this gap: "Precision oncology must be for all cancer patients, not just the privileged few."
To support implementation, the Commission has developed practical tools and frameworks to help healthcare systems assess their readiness for precision oncology, build workforce capacity, monitor progress and make evidence-based decisions about investment and delivery. It also highlights the critical role of responsible data sharing and learning health systems in ensuring that advances in precision medicine benefit diverse populations worldwide.
The Commission's focus on system readiness, data-driven innovation, equitable access and international collaboration strongly aligns with the objectives of eHealth-Hub, which is working to advance digital health transformation and improve patient outcomes across the island of Ireland.
